 If you're flying out of New York, chances are you're heading to either JFK or LaGuardia. Both are well-connected to the city, with easy access to subways and AirTrain services. JFK also has an impressive selection of premium airport lounges, a good variety of upscale shops and restaurants, and a free, open-air observation deck that lets you watch the airplanes come in and out of the runways. It's worth noting, however, that the airport is due to undergo a $10 billion renovation starting in 2022 that could affect how long you spend here and your overall experience.

A major downside of JFK: It can be difficult to get to and from the airport if you're staying in southern Queens, Brooklyn (anywhere lower than Williamsburg) or nearby parts of Manhattan. A taxi ride can be pricey and the subway can be a bit of a nightmare during peak hours, especially when there's a lot of congestion in the area.

An alternative: Teterboro Airport

Located in the Boroughs of Teterboro, Moonachie and Hasbrouck Heights in Bergen County, NJ, this general aviation reliever airport serves small and mid-size private and corporate aircraft. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey owns the airport, which is operated by a third-party management company. Teterboro is 12 miles (19 km) from Midtown Manhattan and has two runways,

A new hangar facility, currently under construction, will accommodate medium and larger commercial aircraft.
